SEPTEMBER 30, 2020

Every Single Person Counts

One of the last recordings that Congressmen John Lewis made was encouraging Atlantans to fill out their census. He believed Atlanta would lead to way to ensure every single person gets counted. Honor his legacy by filling out the census today.

You Can Count On Atlanta

The U.S. Constitution mandates that a census, a systematic count of the U.S. population, be conducted every 10 years. The information is used to determine political representation, allocate federal funds, and plan for the future. It only takes a few minutes for you to complete your household’s 2020 Census Survey, but your participation will help shape Atlanta for yourself and your community for the next 10 years.

Political Representation

Every state is allotted two senators, but the allocation of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives is determined by census data. A complete and accurate count of Atlanta’s population is needed for redistricting and for calculating the number of legislators that will speak on our City’s behalf.

Allocation of Federal Funds

Over 70 federal agencies use U.S. Census data when deciding where to allocate their funds. Census data impacts funding for our highways, healthcare, fire departments, parks, libraries, affordable housing, and emergency preparedness programs. It also determines funding for our schools, Head Start Programs, Pell Grants for college students, and so much more. With billions of dollars on this line, it’s essential that every Atlantan is counted.

Knowledge to Plan the Future

An accurate census is essential for planning the future of Atlanta. Data from the census will be used to determine where to build new schools, roads, hospitals, and more. Businesses and nonprofits use census data when deciding where to build or when to expand. Researchers and surveyors will use census data as a basis for their work for the next 10 years. Census data shapes our future. Make sure that future includes you by taking the census today.
